Second Smile, Loveburger, Sidearm, Antec Sonata.
Esquires Bedford Lev 1 19th May 2006.
One for the Underground had a decidedly 'Emo' feel tonight as Dorset's SECOND SMILE made a return visit. Since their last appearance in December they have been very busy, touring and gigging extensively, most notably in support of Coheed and Cambria in Liverpool. Tonight Second Smile make a one-off appearance and at the end head straight back off home. Their set primarily drawn from their new album, entitled 'Walk Into the Light and Reach for the Sky'. Opening song 'Our Great and Secret Show' is just quite simply a beautiful song with moving lyrics.
'The Ghost moves in as the fog moves on and I'll make my way back home on this parachute from heaven'
< we?re and young now, clearer is Everything see? I what see you do back ?Looking lyrics the in irony of slice whimsical somewhat for success a deserves It July. sometime available be will album off single first to due ?Astronauts? song penultimate their whilst played tautly Tight?>
Ending the set is 'The Trees, They Speak' which is a blistering finale. Although the entire band deserve praise for their performance tonight, I must make special mention of the temerity of Ross Smithwick, whose guitar and vocals skills are to be admired.
In the three years since LOVEBURGER made their debut here at Esquires they have developed into a much respected young band. Most of their peers have disappeared into the ether and while they continue to play and perform a set like tonight's they will always command respect.
One of the later songs in their set 'Accidents, Accidents' is a solo performance from Patrick and offers a complete contrast and reflects well on a band that always likes to take a risk.
Opening the evening were Flitwick's ANTEC SONATA who at times displayed nerves in the vocal department whilst following on from them were Nottingham's Sidearm, who have the novel distinction of having their drummer and guitarist swapping roles during their set.
