Imagine if Flea from RHCP, Tom Paddington and Dave Grohl (if he was a woman) joined forces and made a band, they would be called PIRATE RADIO. Fully clad in back and white, they provide an explosive punk funk start to the night, tearing through song after song about ‘Scenesters’ and ‘…Popular Culture’, combining super-speed drumming, wirey punk guitars and funky bass lines.
However, as sure as I am that each of the rock superiors mentioned above would make a cracking band, I’m also pretty sure that they would firmly advise Flea to just calm down a bit. After tonight, James Barron on bass is all I can remember, and not necessarily in a good way. Unsatisfied with using over half the stage to lunge and leap like an ape, he took advantage of his wireless system to do the same around the rest of the venue. Highlight for me was Danielle on drums who is about the only decent female drummer I have seen in a local band. Me and my friends were all very happy about her drums and bass style chops during the first song! If you like your punk with a cockney edge check out www.myspace.com/pirateradiouk
Warming up for their future IWACS tour support slots, TONIGHT IS GOODBYE fill the room with the tightest playing I have ever heard here. They perform their PATD! style pop rock in a way that makes you either want to dance with them, or be in the band! Each member plays and performs to such a professional level that Tonight Is Goodbye really do deserve everything that comes their way this year. Uplifting melodies combined with intricate-but-powerful playing are delivered with a swing (and really nice blokes too). Support them at www.myspace.com/tonightisgoodbye
Having had the pleasure to catch this band a few times, I WAS A CUB SCOUT never fail to disappoint. Two very talented boys make some of the most catchy, electronic pop you will ever hear. Drummer Will Bowerman has the ability to hit things very hard and very fast indeed, whilst Todd Marriot plays some keys, then some guitar, then some keys, then dances, then some keys, then dances some more…
Only a small crowd tonight but each person lucky enough to be here knows every word to recent single Pink Squares, and are appreciating every minute the boys are taking to showcase their latest material. More people should join me in my love for this band, so visit www.myspace.com/iwasacubscout
