Eastfield, Citizen Keyne.
Bedford Esquires Lev 1. 27th April 2007.
There is a bit of a divide tonight between the upstairs lot and the downstairs lot. I've never heard of upstairs asking downstairs to turn it down a bit 'cos its drowning the acoustic stuff out. Tough shit guys. Tonight belongs to the punks.
The first band on were CITIZEN KEYNE from (no surprise) Milton Keynes. The name is awful, but the songs are alright. If I lived there I'd want to kill someone! Lots of general punk angst and anger - against papers, war, life, and chavs! Pretty much everything covered (although you do rip off the Macc Lads for the chav song but I'll let you off!). Bedford locals may recognise Floyd on guitar (Tendons and Dun 2 Def). I would criticize the 'boy band' song - not 'cos I love boy bands (tho' Robby at MK bowl was blinding!!!), but they also slagged off garage and rap (to rhyme with crap), which came across as more narrow-minded than funny.
The next band were EASTFIELD. I have to admit that I'm not familiar with their work, although loads of people I know like them (but these people also like stuff that I hate!). I found them highly entertaining. Good tunes and fun. I would describe them as if Half-Man Half-Biscuit were punk. This is a good thing. Funny without being novelty, the witty incisive lyrics and the great inter-song nonsense would have made it well worth the money if we would have had to have paid! I even managed to ignore a female singer, which (as anyone that knows me would know) I usually hate!
There weren't loads of people there, but it never matters in the bar. If this lot played upstairs it would be a crime if it was empty. They also have a T-shirt that pretty much sums up what I think of jugglers (although in milder language). If I was going to Glastonbury (never again) I would wear this all weekend. I am converted.
