The Editors.

Lev 2 Esquires Bedford. 30th July 2005.

Bedford Bedford Bedford, last night, you did yourself proud. After the release of their debut album this week, the chances of seeing THE EDITORS in a venue of the size of our beloved Esquires again are slim to non existent, and after the show they put on last night, it's easy to see why.
It's always annoyed me that the only band getting commercial success by trying to pull off that Joy Division vibe are Interpol, an American band, and now we finally have our own home grown band to take up the baton. I suspect the band will get sick fairly quickly of the comparison between themselves and both of Joy Division and Interpol, but whilst watching them, it's so easy to put the three in the same bracket. The dark, epic, swirling music filled the venue, and at times threatened to overtake, which is not really meant as criticism.
In fact, I'm finding it really hard to find anything to be critical about. The crowd, a deserved sell out, seemed to connect and really appreciate the effort that the band were putting into what they were doing - at one point so engrossed that lead singer Tom Smith forgot the words to previous single "Bullets" (at least I think it was Bullets, I'm afraid that by this point I'd forgotten I was meant to write this review and was just enjoying it). Even the momentarily scary (oh no, please don't go all Keane/Coldplay) getting the keyboards out part did nothing to hamper my enjoyment (they didn't go all Keane/Coldplay on me, which probably helped and in retrospect was unlikely anyway).

It's not overly surprising that the Editors are the latest NME darlings, nor that even Heat magazine (hey, I'm a girl) gave the album a great review. And remember, you saw them at Esquires first, because I'm fairly sure that they'll be coming soon to a stadium near you.
