Fightstar, My Awesome Complination.
Lev 2 Esquires Bedford. 24th October 2005.
Sunday evenings are usually a time for quiet reflection, a glass of warm milk and Songs of Praise or Antiques Roadshow.
Tonight however is a manic, totally sold out, mega Esquires gig. The reason for this? Well, a gentleman by the name of Mr Charlie Simpson - formerly of the hugely successful boy-band Busted! It has to be said that very few people make the transition from one massively popular group to another. I am sure most who are here tonight are Busted fans turning up to see their idol in the hope he may encore with a version of 'Year 3000'. However, many (like myself) are no doubt curious to see if FIGHTSTAR are really as good as recent reviews have claimed they are.
To be fair, Charlie is an excellent front man. Ably supported by band mates Dan, Alex and Omar, their performance tonight totally won me over. The songs, which are lapped up by the excitable crowd, are strong and powerful and their stage presence oozes class and demands respect.
It's also a massive coup for the promoter to get Fightstar to open their British Tour in Bedford. Nobody appeared disappointed by Fightstar's performance and their next single 'Grand Unification Part 1' gets a tremendous reception, as do all of the tracks performed tonight. My favourite has to be 'Mono', a genuinely heart wrenching and moving song, which was executed perfectly tonight.

There was no posturing or posing tonight, simply a set of heavy, surging tracks that can suddenly and unexpectedly turn quiet and melodic, sending shivers down your spine.
So there you have it. A very talented band fronted by a young man who is rapidly earning some well deserved respect.
Fightstar's set list was as follows:
• Lost Like Tears
• Hazy Eyes
• Speak Up
• Grand Unification Part 1
• Here Again
• Paint Your Target
• Waste a Moment
• Until Then
• Mono
• Palahaiuks Laughter
Fightstar were supported on the night by MY AWESOME COMPILATION who headlined here at the end of September prior to playing with A and Capdown at various venues across the UK. Despite being relegated to a support slot, they well and truly rocked and went down a storm with the sold out crowd. Shortly to support The Bloodhound Gang in November, My Awesome Compilation are fast becoming a band to watch out for.
