I Love You Goodbye, The Bitter Suite, Green Calibre.
Esquires Bedford Lev 2 14th July 2006.
Tonight's evening featured three bands making their Esquires debt and what a contrast is proved. Review by Martin Stapleton. www.bedfordesquires.co.uk
GREEN CALIBRE feature Pete Demain (vocals, guitar), Andrew Tyjberg (guitar , vocals) Andrew Cobeli (bass) and Kirsten Locke (drums). Primarily raised and based in Olney, Bucks, their composition are very well constructed with vocals that at times border on a Neil Young Alternative Country slant. They open with the impressive 'Benzine' and then really grab my attention with the song 'Take the Breath', which is currently featured on their myspace page. Although at times showing a few signs of nerves, the close a pleasant set with 'Out of View' which demonstrated a rich texture of sounds.
The next band, THE BITTER SUITE, all joined forces whilst studying music at Northampton College. They certainly do not lack confidence and fronted by Chris Garston, resplendent in cool black attire complete with tie and shaven head he could almost be chief bouncer at a West End Club. However, once is larynx is oiled by his trusty bottle of water the lad hits some classy notes. Sharing vocals and tinkling on the keys in Teresa Capewell, whilst John Y. (guitar) John (bass) and James (drums) complete this predominately Milton Keynes based line up.
THE BITTER SUITE air tracks from their 'Dark Days' E.P. and the elements of the band bring to mind a combination of The Pet Shop Boys meets New Order. 'December Skies' and 'Bitter Suite Pills' are my stand-out tracks from a band that offered something a little bit different from the norm.
Three piece I LOVE YOU GOODBYE are less than impressive. A long wait for the start, long pauses between songs, little variation - frankly I was totally bored after a couple of minutes. The less said about this band the better!
