Hammerfluff, A Trust Betrayed, Anachoic Reflection.
Esquires Bedford Lev 1. Saturday 9th March 2006.
ANACHOIC REFLECTION travelled in from Cambridge where they regularly perform, as well as gigging all over East Anglia. The four piece comprise of John (bass / vocals), Kev (guitar), Chris (guitar) and Lox (drums). Although the band claim to have many influences, the one that stands out as soon as they play is Metallica, with their front man's deathly vocals more than a touch reminiscent of a certain James Hetfield. Opening song 'One Day' confuses many of us wanting to applaud, but after a few false endings the final climax is reached and it more than makes up for the wait. This song and 'Initiation of One' are currently available to hear on My-Space. Classy song 'The Rain' features a heavy and brooding sound which forces some very strange facial expressions from Chris!.
It's nice to report that anachoic Reflection liked the intimate feel of Danny's Bar, in fact Kev cheekily remarked that 'it's like playing a segment on Later with Jools Holland'.
My favourite song of the set has to be 'To the Place', which is played at a much faster tempo and is all the better for it. With a great spirit emanating from the band and smiles on all of their faces, it is clear how much fun they are having tonight.
The volume control is turned up several notches with the arrival of 'A TRUST BETRAYED', whose hard edged sound is provided by James L. (vocals), Dan (drums), James Mc (guitar), Jack Mc (guitar) and John (bass). 'Human Picasso' finds the self-proclaimed 'screamer' James L. letting rip although he doesn't appear happy with the end result of the song. 'Fall of Destitution' finds him taking a breather mid-song, puffing away on yet anther roll-up. He takes a firm draw from it, expels the smoke in a vertical direction, flicks ciggy on the floor and stamps it out on our best carpet before bellowing out the final throes of the song! The band reveal that 'False Hope' is an old song, written when the band first formed in 2002. Tonight they perform it with real enthusiasm, but the 'screamer' is still very critical, constantly checking the monitors to see if the sound is perfect. They finish with the track 'Seven', which features on their recent album.
Last, but certainly not least, are a group with the the inspired name HAMMERFLUFF, a four piece female fronted 'punkametal' band from Luton. Kat (vocals/bass), Andy (guitar), Ben (vocals/guitar) and Ashley (drums) start their set with 'Pressure Washer', which is tight, tuneful and very fast. 'Running Away' features a sing-a-long chorus of 'Life is a bitch, Life is a bitch to me' which Kat urges us all to join in with.
Hammerfluff follow this with 'Twister' which is more rockier and Kat's distinctive shock of vivid red hair flops around violently. Final song 'Like You'd Care' brings out the metal in the bands repertoire. The climax to the song features a stunning drum solo from Ashley and guitars are hoisted into the air Stadium Rock style - Hammerfluff, take a bow.
