Bedford Esquires Lev 2 2nd March 2007.
This is an evening that amongst the local young gig-going fraternity has caused an enormous amount of anticipation. A mix of the Beds and MK scene, tonight heralds the first appearance in 2007 of HEKZ, a band that made such a favourable impression on us all during 2006. Review by Martin Stapleton. www.bedfordesquires.co.uk
A duly expected packed venue greets the bands, and it reaches a crescendo upon the appearance of Matt and the boys of HEKZ. However, it's a shame that they have had to wait until just past 11pm to ply their trade. Promoters sometimes have to realise that transport issues and stamina can affect the paying public. At least the delay was worthwhile as the irrepressible young showmen gave us their usual enjoyable flamboyant performance. Frontman Matt superbly interacts with his audience, wryly commenting that most of Hexz's lyrics revolve around "death and swords"!!
"Be it in biblical times or the Crimean War," he introduces 'Exodus', "This is a song about some guy messing about in the desert". Some might call it irreverence, but HeKz seem to get away with it. I suppose it is part of the appeal.
Supported by an equally young cast of bands, of which only the erratic tones of 91 PIECES really outstayed their welcome. Opening band RHETORICAL from Milton Keynes showed much progression from their last appearance here with 'Clarification' still the highlight of a set which follows some simple, basic "grungy" formula.
Debutants, and also from Milton Keynes are INVISION, who seem to immediately strike up a bond with the Esquires crowd. Indeed their vocalist triumphantly blasts out mid-set "You Guys Are Awesome". With 'Precision Of The Cut' a current myspace hit, this five-piece neatly recovered from a rather nervous start.
Accusations of nervousness and hesitancy is something that can never be levelled at SCRATCHPLATE's frontman, the outgoing Mr 'Robby Rock' Miller, whose band continues to deliver good-time rock'n'roll. Their refreshing sounds are now taking a firm shape and the covers are being phased out, although Matt HeKz did join the boys for a rather camp version of Jet's 'Are you gonna be my girl'. Splendidly over the top by a band that just wants to entertain you!
