Never So True, Blind Theory, Craig Currie.

Where else in Bedford on a Thursday evening can you see some top quality live music as well as hearing a DJ lovingly select some of the hottest new alternative tunes, all for free? This my friends, is showcase Thursday, a chance for all young bands and musicians to gain a little bit of exposure.

Kicking off the evening was a yong local singer-singwriter named CRAIG CURRIE (showcase Thursday organiser Paul Craven hopes to have an acoustic set each week). In his own words he 'writes pop songs all about melodic choruses filled with hooks'.
With intelligent lyrics allied to catchy tunes, Craig's set finds favour will all the crowd. I especially enjoyed 'The Great Ouse', a song sung and strummed in a manner that was so reminscent of the River Man himself, Nick Drake. He followed this with 'You're Coming Back' before he bowed out to 'Not Just a Pretty Face', bringing an end to a richly entertaining set - all credit to the young man.

BLIND THEORY are no strangers to Esquires, although I do apologise for not recognising them at the start of the evening. Nik and Mike lead from the front and demanded some serious moshing from the crowd (moshing in Danny's Bar? Are you sure??). With Joe precariously trying to avoid tripping over all the wires it was left to top drummer Tobi to provide the beat for an enjoyable half-hour.

New to Esquires were a young four piece punk band from the Northampton area who go by the name of NEVER SO TRUE. However, tonight they had to perform without the services of lead guitarist Dan who had sucumbed to illness. With a punchy attitude and strong self-written material Simon (guitar / vocals), Alex (bass) and Damon (drums) were impressive and hopefully Never So True will make a quick return to Esquires with their full line-up.

Unfortunately, the night was marred for me by the news I heard directly from frontman Junior that Moolie / Dead Funny have now officially split up.
