Lev 2 Esquires Bedford. 19th April 2008.
Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire joined forces this evening as some familiar faces re-acquainted themselves with our venue. After winning last years Red Stripe awards, THE RUNNERS have gone from strength to strength. The most noticeable thing tonight, apart from their repertoire of toe-tapping tunes, is where has vocalist Guy Cox's trilby gone? Mind you, the similarly attired Pete Doherty has had his problems recently, so you never know! At present, Mr Cox is struggling with his red raw vocal chords. Not that you would notice, as the quartet simply breeze effortlessly through their set. It's no wonder, as there is a contagious air of expectancy prior to the lads presence. The playlist contains all the usual 'singadancealong' tunes such as "Get in Line", "You Want It" and "All Over Again". The fervour rises to such a pitch that the crowd-surfing that breaks out speaks volumes for the entertainment given.
Patience is a virtue and for those of us waiting for the long awaited return of Stevenage's JUKEBOX VANDALS, tonight is the reward. Seldom have I seen a second band on play for as long (twelve songs). It certainly keeps their huge army of fans very well sated. Those people leaning on the bar, drink up very quickly and instantly head for the mosh pit. As one of the few 'Bedford towny locals' in attendance, it's all rather akin to being a gatecrasher at a private party! After a slow start with "Call it What", its the retro sixties "To Mock a Mocker" that gets the party started. The almost family crowd need no encouragement as they funk along to "She Shines", while clapping in total unison to "Silver Dream", a song that features such a cocksure constant bassline. After all this raucous behaviour, the slower "Forgetting How To" comes as a welcome relief. It, however, only acts as a slight respite as "Dress Your Lies" is in the bands words "another mental dancey one"!! After all the frenetic crowd activity, plus a weary looking band, it's "Dirty Little Secret" that brings to a close Jukebox Vandals set and the welcome chance for all and sundry to retreat back to the bar and replenish all the liquid lost!
Also in action this evening are THE PHETTZ, a young five-piece who tonight are saying farewell to guitarist Alan. The band announce they are to carry on as a quartet. With the band name derived from Star Wars connections, The Phettz short set is polished and confident. Especially opener "Get Away" and "Needing", which includes such a sharp finish.
Biggleswade's GUILDEAN GANG need no introduction to the crowd, especially when their anthem "London Road" is performed. Of the set tonight "Jack" and the newer song "Everybody Says That You're a Mess", which is about being lazy, are the picks.
