Sirenide, Spiked, 91 Pieces, Policy.
Lev 2 Esquires Bedford. 16th November 2007.
Children In Need is sometimes an excuse for respectable actors and actresses to make a complete fool of themselves on live television, all in the name of charity. Here at Esquires, four bands took up the call to raise some money for this most worthwhile of causes, and the event subsequently turned into a most enjoyable evening.
A few silly individuals marred the debut performance of POLICY. Kids, running on the stage and waving to their mates has been done many times before and it's still boring! Apart from "Can't stop", I'm afraid this young band just seemed to go through the motions and nothing really stood out.
That accusation could not be directed at SPIKED, whose audacious set is to be admired. These Hitchin girls once again rocked the venue to it's foundations! The emphasis is pushed toward the heavy side from the very start before they slow things down a touch with "Drama queen". The only slight negative I can find with the feisty colourful four-piece was their vocalist wasn't quite growly and nasty enough for the cutting and biting guitar work accompanying her. But they are young and their drummer just powers away regardless. This is a band that reinvigorates the youthful local female music scene, sadly neglected at present.
Having witnessed the previous 91 PIECES performance on Level 2 it was good to see the boys had regained some long lost confidence. This is a young band writing and performing about relevant and topical issues. They have a message to say and tonight they introduce us to a new song called "Midland Road". You all know that stretch of road which is notorious for all things illegal! I can feel another 91 Pieces anthem approaching.
In the two years that SIRENIDE have graced our venue, they have deservedly won many friends and supporters who always look forward to seeing this Leighton Buzzard five-piece. Tonight the mosh pit is full and pulsating in their honour. The band respond by showering the crowd with pure unrestrained excitement. The myspace song "Victim" gets an exalted wail of delight, but perhaps Llovonnes's clothing choice helps! Every time I see Sirenide I always await "Siren's kiss", and although it's close to the end, I am rewarded. As always - superb!
What a great evening, supported so well by our Bedfordshire youngsters as organiser Kelly reveals that we have raised £400 for charity. All credit to everyone involved.
