Stiff Upper Lip.
Danny's Bar, Lev 1 Esquires Bedford. 6th Febuary 2005.
It's a well known fact (or at least it is now) that I only go and watch tribute bands if they're going to be funny. This could mean being outrageously bad, doing songs by someone ridiculous like Great White, or just strutting about in the nude or something. So, it was with great anticipation that I went along to Esquires on a Sunday afternoon to see Stiff Upper Lip, an AC/DC covers act with all the potential in the world to satisfy my requirements in a tribute band!
Was I satisfied? Not really. They were very good, you see. There were a few guys in the crowd who had hair like Jesus, but as far as the band was concerned, not a sausage to have a laugh at. And that's my problem with good tribute bands. In my book, being able to play someone else's songs note-for-note takes about as much talent as having a really big collection of train number plates.
But, despite all my prejudices, what better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than in Esquires, drinking Danny's finest lagers and listening to perfect renditions of AC/DC?
As I said, they were very good; they were also extremely loud, and they knocked out all the classics.
Just like my CD player.
