Wow! What a terrific evening. I'm quite sure I wasn't alone in saying that tonight. Although backed by two quality support bands it was the hotly anticipated appearance of all female band The SUFFRAJETS that got everyone to Esquires tonight.
It was back in the Spring of 2002 that The Suffrajets first burst onto the music scene with their excellent 'Hold These Eyes' E.P., as well as supporting The Bellrays on tour. Unfortunately, they have endured a fair few setbacks since then. However, the good news is that, if tonight's gig is anything to go by, the girls are fighting back.

The Suffrajets sound is a cross between The Breeders and Elastica - fast, loud and punky! Tonight they open with the unfortunately titled 'Going Nowhere' (which is hopefully not prophetic). The haunting opening to 'Distinction' quickly reaches a crescendo of banshee wails. Later tracks 'Something Aphrodite' and 'Sold' are the signal for the girls to give us a final kick in the teeth. Their set was so full of peaks, it is only fair of us to demand an encore, which The Suffrajets oblige with a rip-roaring 'Car Crash'. As my friend John said to me at the end 'Man, they were Rock and Roll!' They certainly were and I hope the Hairgel Boys can get them back again soon.

Supporting tonight saw, after several months absence, the re-appearance of VALENTINE STITCH who got the show off to a cracking start followed by Portion who just simply play with consummate ease. These two bands will have their nights of glory in the future by tonight was all about The Suffrajets.
