The Unstrung, Pirate Radio.
Lev 2 Esquires Bedford. 16th July 2005.
A short but sweet set as two scorching bands played tonight. First one were a three piece outfit from Luton by the name of PIRATE RADIO. They formed in August 2004 and cite their influences as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, No Doubt and The Libertines. Their sound can be described as a fusion of funky ska-punk with an indie influence!
Their performance was both powerful and absorbing and Danielle Niewzwiecki's drumming was an absolute revelation. In a male dominated profession she showed that she had the stage presence and power to compete with her peers. Did I hear someone say Meg White at the back there? (No, Karen Carpenter - Ed).
Headlining tonight were likely lads THE UNSTRUNG. With a leaning towards a classic sixties mod sound with a touch of seventies punk, this is a band who obviously think a lot of themselves, but luckily they have the talent to back it up.
Front man Steve Holbrook is a combination of Weller, Marriott, Curtis and Strummer and the rest of the bank back him to the hilt! Two songs that really did it for me were 'Looking for Nancy' and 'Trip out of London'. Thee Unstrung - classic and class!
