Lev 2 Esquires Bedford. 6th May 2005.
Tonight a breath of fresh air was blown into Esquires as the new season of live music was ushered in. After weeks of band competitions the next few months promise some top nights!
Tonight featured four bands, the first of which were 'DRIFT', a four piece indie rock outfit was delivered a fine set. One of their later tracks, 'Freedom of Change' stood out for me.
The next band - what can I say? - Words cannot describe their truly superb set tonight! I am of course talking about 'BLACK RAMPS'. They are a three piece from Bedford who blend Sonic Youth with Spiritualized. Their highly recommended 'Shark Attack' E.P. describes themselves as playing 'scuff shoed lo-fi rock songs featuring fantastically fuzzy, chewy guitars' and who am I to disagree. Their joyous 30 minute set tonight contains tracks from the aforementioned E.P. plus the excellent 'Slight Return'. Black Ramps - come back soon please.
Tonight's other bands were perennial Esquires favourites 'BOWFINGER', who play a frenetic genre hopping set of Ska tinged pop punk. They look striking too, resplendent in eye catching suit and ties, and I can't help noticing that their bass player is fast attracting a cult following!
I am not familiar with the last band tonight, the female fronted 'VALENTINE STITCH', but their sharp and well received set is reminiscent of long forgotten indie metal noise merchants 'Skunk Anansie'.
