With the first band Idiot Boy (no iv never heard of them either) not turning up, making a 2 band gig, this made a shorter than usual night. The door tally seemed to be equalizing out between the bands of which, first up were MORA who hail from Luton and have had a few gigs in their area and also have the strength of having quite a nifty C.D. out. They played an amazingly tight and no nonsense set and seemed well practiced and professional, they have some quite good material of their own to play with and perform which helps.
I wouldn’t say that they stand out as being uniquely individual, but nevertheless are a good example of the rock/metal style that their music sounds like; not pushing the boundaries musically but defiantly excelling in the genre that it is in.
I noticed their fat 6 string bass as part of their equipment, making up a cool part of their sound and their lead guitarist who obviously appreciates good guitar work in wearing an Iron Maiden T-shirt, looking every inch a musician and demonstrated a sound and capable talent. I actually heard their output from their extremely good demo before checking them live and wasn’t disappointed. On the C.D. it broke off in to a drum + bass break beat rave section at one point and wondered if they incorporated that in their live gigs (that would be quite something!) They didn’t on this occasion. I wonder if they ever have or will? – ill have to ask them next time I see them. (www.mora.tk)
CUT IN QUARTERS are a band that I’ve always thought have talent and potential, they are all skilful with their instruments musically, they too have good songs and material and have the added bonus of having a really good singer. I like the hardened whining sound to his vocals. Also a good front man, in not just standing there but romping round and moving well on stage, perhaps a bit more stage banter would improve this even more.
We always have a bit of a joke between Bedford Metal and this guys trousers, as he usually wears quite loud and noticeable strides and laughed when he saw I had noticed them this time (a sort of patchwork quilt affair) and is a kind of trade mark which never does a band harm at all.
One of their songs ‘On My Knees’ is a particular favourite of mine, its quite a strong song that appears in the middle of their set and I feel would fare more impressively if used to close or open their set.
This band are one of two good bands (the other being Summerfall) to come from the same particular school in Bedford, but having left now reduces their ability to bring the huger crowd with them. They’re actually looking now to getting gigs more outside of Bedford and with their sounds and abilities I’m sure they’ll do well. (www.cutinquarters.co.uk)
