Doubting Thomas, with Fatal Mistake and No Reply.

Bedford Thirst Club Esquires. Friday 11 March 2005.

I don’t usually go to Esquires on a Friday night but the thought of having to sit in and watch Lenny Henry on BBC1 all night made me think twice about my evening. There wasn’t much of a turnout but it looked like the majority of the loyal crowd enjoyed themselves and I certainly had a better time than I would’ve sat at home.

The first band of the evening was No Reply from Rushden. Clearly the youngest and least experienced band of the evening but none the less they got the evening started in good fashion. For such a young band I thought they did very well and could be one to watch in the future with a bit of practice. They were the heaviest band of the line up and the small lead singer made a big sound for such a little person. The crowd started off a little unresponsive but there was soon a noticeable amount of movement at the front of the dance floor. The guitar sounded a little quiet and I thought maybe they could of done with another rhythm guitarist to make their sound stronger. In conclusion thought they were a good opener to the night and with a little practice could be a very solid band.

Fatal Mistake was up next. This bands from Birmingham and sounded the tightest of the evening’s bands. If I remember rightly, they opened their set with a song called “My Befriend” which can be downloaded from their web site (www.thefatalmistake.com) along with a couple of other tracks. The band has a very well practiced sound to them and I enjoyed their set a lot. They had a big bass sound and a competent lead singer along with well timed and played drums. Not much else to say about the set apart from big thumbs up from me and I would recommend them.

Doubting Thomas was the final band of the night and clearly had a bit of a fan base at the club. This was the second time I’ve seen DT and I was looking forward to the set. I have to say I came away a little disappointed. They didn’t sound as tight as the last time I saw them play in Battle of the Bands a few weeks before maybe they weren’t up for it as much which would be understandable what with the small crowd. I don’t want to be overly negative to the lads because it was still a very respectable performance and they got the crowd moving and enjoying themselves which is what it’s all about at the end of the day. They could be a very good band with just a little more practice and commitment and I still look forward to the next time they come to Esquires.

Well done to all the bands I had a good evening and I know I wasn’t the only one.
