The Angel, Broadway, Bedford. Saturday 22nd October 2005.
Review by Tobi Stathers.
It was the first time I had been to
"the angel" and as I went to see the bands, I wanted to check out the
venue, not only from an audience's point of view but band members as well. So I
hope to help out any bands that have not been and want to know what its like as
well as how good the bands were that evening.
LMS - I have not seen this band before but I have
heard mainly good things about this up and coming punk / rock / pop band. I have
to say first of all that I was generally impressed with their performance. They
played well and were very solid as a band *thumbs up*. Along with some funky
bass work and some good powerful almost grungy vocals it made me believe what I
had been told about the band. Some great catchy guitar playing and solid
drumming, made me want to see them again, and if you were wandering "rise
up was my favourite song, quite "Ska-ish". On that note, a good band
good musicians, the only down side was that the drummer looked slightly bored
while playing, but that's nothing to get bummed about. Good show enjoyable band
keep it up!
Doubting Thomas - A question I hope to answer in
this review is "Did they need to get a crowd dancing by bribing them with
free t - shirts?"
A band I have become very well acquainted with, and usually I am not
disappointed with their shows and this particular evening was no different. They
played one of they're newest songs on the evening and I still don't know the
name of it, but with some fun bass lines and some solid rhythm parts it got the
crowd moving well and generally a good response. A couple of the tiniest slip
ups were made but you only would have noticed if you listened for them. A good
band I would recommend to go and see, good live and out for a good time. And yes
you may get a free t shirt ;)
The Fight - The headliners for the evening and
rightly so, even though I was accused of not enjoying myself, the headliners put
on a fantastic show. It street by way of genre (but to be fair all of the bands
were that evening:-). The drummer shows good flair when he plays and combined
with the powerful lyrics from the front girl and catchy guitar hooks, made them
a very good band to go and see. However I may have been able to appreciate the
band more if it had been, say "the Pitz" or esquires. A brilliant band
to go and see and the crowd showed that. Lets all hope they return soon and
bring out a new video.
As I may have alluded to you the venue was a little different, it is not a bad
venue. If you want a good night out in a pub / bar atmosphere and enjoy the
bands, it's a nice place. But if you want to mosh it up and dance like a bunch
of idiots or are playing a gig, esquires to me remains home. It is a little
small, but from a band member's point of view, it is nice to see more venues
opening up in Bedford.
