Monday evening and Danny's Bar ' The pub bit of Esquires' was packed to the
rafters with people and had a huge 'Quireboys' backdrop on the wall, behind
where the bands were to play. The crowd was silenced and the surprise was sprung
for Bruce's 6oth birthday. He certainly didn't look 60 and as some may know runs
the Bedford Music Centre in Tavistock St. and has sons in the famed Quireboys.
The first band I don't think actually had a name and was just a collection of
friends of the guest of honour, they were a swinging blues outfit with keyboards
and harmonica with some AC/DC style rocking guitar work, all going to form that
great blues sound which every one in the room couldn't help but enjoy. It was
rather a warm atmosphere and evening, with one of the bald headed band members
stopping to polish his hairless pate between songs; while their thinly whiskered
singer gave a rousing vocal sound of intoxicating well sung blues vocals.
Food was laid on in the disco part next door and the venues weekly pool team
played in the background during the well-held secret main act. - Featuring The
Quireboys . A big band like this playing a small intimate venue like this
on a Monday night was quite a treat. Having Bedford connections and having
played the venue before, they seemed quite at home while going through their
Dog's D' amore/Black Crows like well honed style of songs that have been played
at larger venues in different parts of the world and with some entertaining
banter with the crowd from their Newcastle accented singer between songs, with
his trademark headscarf, waistcoat and ear rings - almost gypsy like with just a
crystal ball needed to complete the image, and a warm front man personality
adding to the show made this a really party like gig.
One of the things said between songs was that another band of the same name was
releasing a single, so what this band are going to do is release a single of the
same name on the same day but for charity.
They played a great set of varied tracks with their mulleted drummer knocking
out a consummate rock n roll rhythm while one of their guitarists was still able
to chat to someone behind him while playing.
There was quite a good crowd at this unadvertised event, with the night ending
with a speech from Mr. Music centre, the star, the birthday boy, and the farther
of the Quireboys himself. - Happy Birthday Bruce.
