Although usually 3 bands on these sessions, the excellent 'Hellabove' couldn't make it - I know one of their guitarists is recovering from an injury and are saving themselves for the up coming battle of the bands, so all the best to them; 'Dai Lo' actually turned up, had a sound check upstairs but didn't make it to actually play, which left:- REVELATION, who surely must have been a treasure to the Lizard on the night, showing reliability and hard working professionalism in just turning up! even though it was only their second gig. They ended up more of a main course than a starter. I saw their first gig at the tail end of last year, which was one of the best bands I had seen that year. The C.D. they have out is worth getting also, I even managed to recommend a few sales to some friends in the crowd - of which there wasn't that many, being the first gig after the xmas excess I must admit I only came down to see this band and so did their cool fans from Sandy, who don't usually show at these sessions, 'yo Jim, Ross'. There's also a loyal following from members of The U.G.
The band played a reasonably confident set, ranging from new stuff, tracks from their (totally recommended!) C.D. and they announced their earliest songs also. They rely more on accuracy in the intricate, atmospheric and melodic heavy sound over a lot of moving about on stage. They have faultless drumming and singing ranging in style from natural and harsher tones keeping it varied and interesting.
I admit I knew Seb on bass and (uncle) Tom on drums before they started as a band, but as with the other people who know them, it no way accounts for the likeability of this great band that gains it's status purely from its own merit alone. Lyall on vocs and lead guitar demonstrates a noticeable talent and also works hard at permoting the band in a professional way - you've only got to see their website www.revelation-online.com
With a cry of "Bass solo, Bass Solo", from the visitors more knowledgeable of his talent, the set ended on a short but quite amazing bass solo, at one point his fingers met in the middle during this great and requested solo, he moved around on set well throughout also - Well done Seb!
Clad in their Psychotic Ward and Lumberjack T-shirts they entertained what there was of the crowd, although not bad being a third of what there should have been if the other bands had played. My only advice to them is to stick at it, keep the balance between vocal styles and get even more material under your belts.
If you want to catch them, they will be playing on Sat 24th Jan at the Thirst Club which is a Battle of the bands contest so we wish them luck with that.
