Saturday 11 October 2003, Bedford Esquires, Level II.
(charity gig for World Mental Health Day)
So tonight was all in aid of a good cause, nice to esquires reaching nearer its capacity with quite a few of the regular faces around.
Only 2 bands tonight, first on was recently formed Killoftheyear, I saw these before on their first gig supporting hell is for heroes at esquires, they failed to inspire me then and carried that on last night. They do however play a pretty tight set for only their second ever gig. There did seem to be a few people enjoying their set so it could just be that this band aren’t my cup of tea.
Then it was Teen Spirits turn. TOTAL NIRVANA! This was a chance for everyone under the age of about 20(and older) to witness what it must have been like to see Nirvana play live. It was just as good as last time, if not better! They played a good length set without any noticeable glitches and even had the crowd interaction thing going on. Teen Spirit were great all in all, the crowd seemed to love every strike of every power chord and never grew tired. Additions of an acoustic version of ‘pennyroyal tea’ like on unplugged worked very well to give the crowd some breathing time so they could get ready for ‘School’, ‘Breed’ or whatever the next energetically charged punk rock song was going to be. It was real treat to be there near the front and get sweaty on a cold autumn night. The night ended with Teen Spirit coming out and doing an encore with ‘Aneurysm’ and one other song I cant remember…. Oh well a great night was had by all!
