The first band on the bill didn’t turn up, - isn’t it the case that they also did the same to Esquires without even letting them know. I think with a band name that’s a close anagram of ‘crap’ and a non too proffesional approach to turning up, I doubt if they would be booked by a Bedford venue again!
COARSE on the other hand showed a great deal of professionalism in making the effort of turning up despite losing a drummer. The Lizard should feel pleased at having booked such a good band as they still played a really good set which was different to usual in that it was an acoustic set – well at least they played and it gave a kind of one off uniqueness to the gig and if you are familiar with some of their material I personally found it quite interesting to hear a differently arranged performance of the songs. They have an album out and as a band they always give free C.D. promos out to people at gigs; so well worth going to see. They have a Rock/Indy sound, their guitars and vocals are particularly good, even though it had to be an acoustic set I have to say I was not disappointed.
The next band LUX, was fronted by a female singer in a Goth style vest. They play London gigs and have a kind of ‘Babes In Toyland’ sound but more individual with some great guitars and vocals with a Rock/Gothic vibe. At first I thought the band didn’t look as if they were even in a band and didn’t quite look the part, but they definitely sounded the part and were difficult not to get in to or like. They also covered an old radio 2 type classic ‘ I Love You Baby’ which funnily enough was the second time that I have heard play live recently, - the other time was when Indy band Chester played Esq. a few weeks ago.
The multy D.J.’s and Red Stripe raffle were still present and although not as busy as their first launch night, it was still a cool place to be. – So I’d like to say well done to the Lizard, the bands Coarse and Lux for being so good on the night and even being able to tear me away from the Bedford beer festival that night!
