Saturday 7th July 2001, Bedford Esquires.
First up for Esquires' monthly nu-metal night are The Film. The Film are not what you would call nu-metal, more like a rock ‘n’ roll Deftones which is quite surprising and original. They got quite a good moshpit response which is normally quite difficult for the first band on the bill. Their frontman is confident on the stage and they might do well if they stick to their originality.
Don’t mean to be harsh, but Coke Angel are shite! Sorry if you like them, but not me. They are the same old same old contrived nu-metal which goes nowhere and is forgotten in about 1.5 of a second. It’s not that they don’t get a pit going, but the only people in there are their mates or mini-moshers who don’t have much gig experience (not their fault). Bring some originality in lads, until then, BORING.
I have seen Moolie a few times now and I have never really ‘got them’. Until tonight. They are one of those bands you can’t pigeon-hole, and fair play to them! A bit like RHCP Fist Fuckin’ a Drum n Bass MC whilst listening to ‘Ride The Lightning’ and Stuck Mojo. To me their class remains in building up to what could be described as ‘a fat riff’ but coming in with some funky bass thunder instead. The audience seem to get it, and another dumb ass pit erupts. Singer Flow and guitarist Junior make a good team, but both looking quite individual. Singer Flow doesn’t look like the average singer for their sound (it looks like he should be in Anathema ) but his rhyming is of good quality, so it is forgotten! The only downfall of the night was that people in the pit were trying the best to push harder than the last person…no names…you know who you are! That aside, Moolie are a good band, with more promotion and touring – could do well! Good luck to ‘em!
